WHEN MOST PEOPLE THINK ABOUT THE ‘90S, JNCO JEANS, WALLET CHAINS, BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO, AND THE ADVENT OF DIAL-UP INTERNET COME TO MIND. FOR THOSE THAT GREW UP IN THE ‘90S, THINKING BACK TO THE MUSIC OF THAT ERA IS WHAT ELICITS TRUE FEELINGS OF NOSTALGIA. DISTORTED, CATCHY RIFFS AND AGGRESSIVE, YET MELODIC VOCAL HOOKS BECAME OUR YOUTH ANTHEMS. IN WAYS, THE ‘90S FELT LIKE THE HANGOVER FROM THE ‘70S THAT THE ‘80S MANAGED TO AVOID. AS IS OFTEN THE CASE THOUGH, THE SOUNDS OF THE OLD ARE LENDING INFLUENCE TO THE SOUNDS OF THE NEW. LIKE MANY OF THEIR PREDECESSORS, NOT BAD NOT WELL, AN ALT-ROCK BAND FROM WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, IS STRIKING AT THE SAME TEXTURES OF THOSE NOSTALGIC ANTHEMS WHILE EVOKING AND INTERTWINING THEIR OWN MODERN AESTHETIC. COMPRISED OF AN ARRAY OF MUSICIANS FROM CURRENT AND FORMER WORCESTER, MA AREA BANDS, INCLUDING USLIGHTS AND HERRA TERRA (GREGG KUSUMAH-ATMADJA/SHAWN PELKEY); AND GHOST OCEAN, PEREGRINE, AND MAKESHIFT MEMORIAL (MATT KILLORAN/JAKE PAGOAGA/TOM MARTIN). THIS DIVERSE MUSICAL BACKGROUND LAID THE GROUNDWORK FOR SOMETHING UNIQUE AND EXCITING YET FAMILIAR. INITIAL SONGWRITING BEGAN WHILE IN THE CLUTCHES OF THE COVID PANDEMIC AND IT WOULD BE ALMOST A YEAR BEFORE EVERYONE HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET IN PERSON. WHAT STARTED WITH THE CASUAL SHARING OF FILES WITH ONE ANOTHER DURING MONTHS OF QUARANTINE, BECAME A COHESIVE CATALOG OF SONGS THAT CAPTURED THE BAND’S DISTINCT MUSICAL CHEMISTRY.
