Q+A: SKYTIGERS

As we prepare for the 2019 RUMBLE, get to know the bands. We sent out a list of questions and asked the bands to pick 5.

RUMBLE Q+A: SKYTIGERS

1] Getting to know you: Where is your band from? Don’t say outer space. Or your mother. Maybe something nice about your town?

SkyTigers, for the most part, hail from the Lowell area of Massachusetts. Ryan grew up in Dracut, Brian grew up in Billerica and Jon’s spent most of his life in Tewksbury. Rochelle is the outlier. She’s originally from PA, and is currently from the Worcester area.  She claims to live in Berlin, but we’re all pretty sure that’s in Germany.

2] Band member dynamics are fun, right? Introduce us to your band, share nicknames and bad habits.

SkyTigers is Brian Linehan on bass and lead vocals; Ryan Moloney on drums; Rochelle Ferguson on rhythm guitar; and Jon Cogswell is back on lead guitar.

Ryan is the only member with a nickname, Ripper.  However, no one really calls him that except for himself.  We’re still trying to make Gnars Ulrich stick though.

That being said, what we lack in nicknames, we certainly make up for in bad habits.  Ryan for example hates to practice and doesn’t even really listen to music. We once asked him what he listens to when he’s driving and, in all honesty, he replied with “youtube videos of karaoke songs.”

Brian on the other hand loves to practice, but typically refuses to sing at practice, or tune, or play the right notes.

Most people who see SkyTigers remember us for playing at least one really awesome cover per set, and Jon’s surgical precision with a whammy bar. However, Jon hates cover songs and goes through phases of refusing to use a Floyd rose tremolo out of spite. He also buys new guitars more often than most people change their underwear. His guitar habit is also rubbing off on Rochelle, who, in the last year, has also acquired a significant collection.

Speaking of Rochelle, we are pretty convinced that she doesn’t own a clock and tells time solely based upon the position of the sun, which tends to be difficult seeing as SkyTigers only practice and play shows at night.

3] Genres are mind numbing. Make one up for your band.

Ryan came up with the term “power depression.” It seems pretty fitting.

4] This is the 40th anniversary of the Rumble. It officially began at the legendary Rat in Kenmore Square. It closed in 1997. What is your favorite rock venue that isn’t around anymore?

Lowell used to have an awesome venue called the Sugar Shack located right on UMass Lowell’s north campus. It was a coffee house by day and a punk/hardcore venue by night. The Shack closed sometime in the early 00’s, which may have been for the best seeing as the floor had disconnected from one of the walls and you could literally see it sinking lower and lower during shows.

5] This year has been heavy on band biopics. Who’d play your band members in the movie?

Anthony Carrigan would have to play Brian.  People might know him as Noho Hank from HBO’s Barry. Not only can he perfectly deliver a dry sense of humor, but he also has alopecia on the same scale as Brian.

Ryan claims that either Steve Buschemi or David Spade would have to play him, but we all know that either Daniel Radcliff or Elijah Wood would be much more fitting.

A good fit for Jon is a bit tough to nail down. You need a handsome gentleman with a sense of humor, but also someone who has an air of mystery to them. Tom Hardy comes to mind, but he may be a bit too brooding.  I think either Chris Pine or Sean William Scott would most accurately portray Jon.

Charlize Theron would have been a good fit to play Rochelle a few years ago, but she may be a bit too old at this point.  I think Dakota Fanning could pull it off though. She was pretty good as Cherie Currie in The Runaways.

6] What’s one thing you want people to know about SkyTigers? (the add your own option)

We have been a band since 2010, and have been using the name SkyTigers since that time.  We did not, in any way, shape or form take the name from the Red City Radio record that came out last year.  It is getting very annoying having to explain that.
